A few years ago, Christina and I stood outside Office Depot to get in line for the “Best deal” for a Dell Laptop at 4:00AM!! Not only were we nuts to do that, we had Nathan with us and he was less than a year old bundled up in a baby carrier in the cold. We took turns getting him and us warm in the car.

All hell broke loose!!

When it came time for them to open the doors, there was no system or number in line for your turn to pick something out. All hell broke loose!! We were 6th in line outside and probably 20th in line by the time I would’ve made it to the check stand. I say “probably” because we didn’t make it to the check stand. The “best deal” was GONE! All that waiting in line in the cold was for nothing!

“Make Me Proud!!”

Well, it’s been a while since my last post. But I have a comment and would like to hear some opinions on this.

A couple days ago on a TV show, I saw a little boy getting up to bat a ball in a softball game. He’s very nervous. His dad yells out, “MAKE ME PROUD SON!!” with a big ol’ smile on his face.

The first thing I could think of is, ‘Wouldn’t he be proud of him anyway??’ Then I got to thinking about that statement “Make me proud son!” It’s a statement meant to encourage the youth, but ultimately sets them up for disappointment and a feeling of failure IF the youth doesn’t succeed at his or her task.

If that boy missed all 3 pitches and struck out, would dad still be proud? Wouldn’t he be proud that the young boy had the courage to get up in front of a fast ball coming right at him and attempting to hit it?

I think I would want my kids to know that I am proud of them NO MATTER WHAT! No matter what happens, no matter what they decide to do, no matter if they are down in the dumps or climbing the tallest ladder, I am proud of them because they are the most precious people in my life!

I would love to hear your comments on this.

All that waiting in line in the cold was for nothing!

We left and raced over to Best Buy and their deal was gone too…..so we thought! I told them our experience at the last store and asked them if they had any overstock that they might have missed in the back. Five minutes later they came back with 2 Gateway Laptops. So it wasn’t entirely for nothing!

But, after that experience, I learned I wasn’t going to waste my time in line again in hopes by CHANCE I would be able to get that 1 special item before the other 100 people in front of me got it.

I don’t have to worry about that now! I like shopping online! Cyber Monday’s is the “thing” to do now! So once you’ve stood in line and didn’t get what you wanted, click on the link below and find it online! No standing in the cold…..unless you WANT to!

Some great advice from my last Vocal Professor at Westminster Choir College, Elem Eley. I hope it inspires you as it did me!

Kavbar's Blog

One of the greatest joys in my life is to teach gifted singers on a regular basis (in my studio at Westminster Choir College), several other wonderful artists periodically, and quite a few students in various master classes. Regardless of the frequency of these encounters, whatever learning and growth take place is dependent on what both teacher and student do.

To a very large degree, the effectiveness of a voice teacher is due to how well he/she motivates students. A good teacher is never too easily satisfied, and the focus of a lesson is seldom limited to resonance and support (though vitally important). One teaches artistry, musicianship, organized thinking, discipline…and responsibility. Various teachers have varying styles to help students work well and accomplish much; my own manner is to be respectful and considerate of the student, to be authoritative (after all, I do believe in what I teach!), but seldom…

I just generated my first QR Code and there it is above. If you have a smartphone and have the app QRReader, you can scan the image above and it will take you…. well it will bring you back to here, my blog, as the link for this QR Code is my blog URL.

The possibilites are endless and you can generate Code after Code. The codes can be generated as links to URL’s, links to text, links to phone numbers and links to SMS.

I can see the possibilities for library services as it costs nothing to create the QRCodes. You can read the following post, QR Codes at Miami University Library  as an example of how one library is utilising QR Codes to enhance service provision.

You just visit QR-Code Generator and you can create a code in less than a minute!
